Have Big Dreams and Make Full Use of Youth
As President Xi Jinping put it in the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, “A nation will prosper only when its young people thrive. China’s young people today are living in a remarkable time. They have an incomparably broad stage on which to display their full talents, and they have incomparably bright prospects of realizing their dreams.” This is President Xi’s wish for China’s young people, but how should today’s youths display their ambitions in the new era, realize their dreams in practice, and play their part in China’s journey to build a modern socialist state holistically?
To start with, establishing lofty ideals and strong beliefs is a fundamental driving force for young people as they grow up and reach their prime. In the face of complex trends of thought, coupled with the burgeoning technology of the Internet, the young generation will inevitably get bogged down in a variety of thought trends and some are eager to achieve short-term goals quickly without long-term planning, thus neglecting spiritual and cultural pursuits. It is undeniable that young people should rationally identify with core socialist values and learn more about the history of the Party and the country, as well as fine traditional Chinese culture. Still, whether it is to foster core socialist values or to strengthen cultural confidence, patriotism is the deepest and most enduring love. Thus, the love for the country, the Party, and socialism is the ideological basis for the growth of contemporary youth.
Second, the commitment to arduous tasks is an essential approach for young people to achieve their dreams in practice. President Xi added that young people must firmly root themselves in major battlefields and front lines, such as environmental improvement, rural revitalization, serving the people, emergency response and disaster relief, and the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era and our Party has proposed the task of “effectively consolidating and expanding the achievements of poverty alleviation and connecting these achievements with rural revitalization”. Youth is a dominant force in promoting rural revitalization and they need to take rural areas as a "big classroom" to better understand our national conditions, and as a "melting pot" to develop their talents and accumulate experience.
Third, innovation and creation are needed for young people to make full use of their youth. President Xi has stressed that young scientific and technological personnel should foster a scientific spirit, cultivate innovative thinking, tap their potential, improve their capacities, and keep surpassing their predecessors while learning from them. Chinese people are innovative and the Chinese nation is a leading nation in inventions. Scientists in the past showed us the spirit of their generation which made breakthroughs with hard work and perseverance. Similarly, younger students in the new era are striving to catch up and stay at the forefront of scientific and cultural innovation.
Finally, participation in global governance is an international responsibility for young people so that they can play their part in China’s journey to build a modern socialist state in an all-around way. In the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, young people have an essential mission. Xi Jinping attaches great importance to the role of young people in promoting cooperation and deepening international exchanges. Building a just, inclusive, and sustainable planet is the responsibility of everyone, including youngsters all over the world. Young people should be an important force in promoting the peace and development of mankind. When all the young people fulfill their ideals and responsibilities, there will be a promising future for the noble cause of peace and human development.
In a nutshell, young people should acquire the scientific world-outlook and methodology, and correctly understand the relationship between self-growth, national prosperity, and world development. By following the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the younger generation will make full use of their youth and forge ahead to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
