New Changes in My Hometown
Located at the foot of the Taihang Mountains of Hebei Province, my hometown, a small town that cannot be found on the map, displayed greater vitality in the past ten years. As the saying goes, the longer it lives, the younger it becomes.
Ten years ago, my hometown was a state-level poverty-stricken county. More than half of local villagers lived in absolute poverty, with an average annual income of less than five thousand yuan. Back then, its mountain roads were rough and difficult to get around. There were no public transportation or private cars when I was a child. The only way to go to the city was to get a ride from the mailman who came here every five days.
You may wonder how did local people live with few infrastructure and jobs? The answer was they worked as migrant workers in big cities. Like many impoverished regions in China and other countries, most young villagers moved to cities for work, and their families lived on the money they sent home. While in villages, the elderly and young children had no work opportunities to support their family. On top of that, unlike other regions with fertile lands, my hometown was in a mountain area, which condemned it to limited grain output. In terms of education, students had to walk several kilometers every day to go to the town school because there was none in the village. During heavy rains in summer, electricity grids frequently broke down and people had difficulty accessing the Internet. In winter, we had to use coal stoves for heating, which was neither safe nor clean.
However, poverty was a thing of the past. Now, my village has changed beyond all recognition. Especially after the implementation of rural revitalization and the Beautiful China Initiative nationwide, the national highway stretched from the provincial capital straight to the mountains, with fewer muddy roads. Thus, express delivery is accessible in our village. As university graduates were encouraged to work in the countryside, new village officials gave their best shots. After their arrival, a series of new agricultural techniques were introduced. High-quality fruit trees were planted according to local conditions, and various fruits were sold to all parts of the country through live-streaming sales.
Thanks to ecological parks and tourism, villagers have responded to the call to transform village houses into hotels. New houses and new neighborhoods have been built. As for education, our town’s schools have utilized subsidies to expand into boarding schools, which have spared students from long treks amid winds and rains. Moreover, the projects of “replacing coal with gas and electricity” are also in full swing. Safe and clean gas has made people’s life in winter warm and secure. At the end of 2020, the year of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, our town was lifted out of poverty, and people felt the tangible benefits of reform and opening up.
In retrospect, it was beyond our wildest dreams that this remote town could now attract friends from all over the country to enjoy its natural beauty. In the past ten years, common prosperity has taken great strides. The state has put its people first, and the people have truly felt the warmth. Over the past decade, our town has seen that “No one left behind” is not lip service and that people now feel much happier and safer. Having enjoyed the real benefits of reform and opening up, we are now more inspired than ever to forge ahead, more resolved than ever to work hard and more confident than ever of securing full success. I believe the country will again fulfill its promises to the people in the coming ten, twenty, or thirty years. Salute to the 20th National Congress’s success and wish the prosperity of our motherland!
