Our Remarkable Decade
The last decade has seen the exponential development of China in all fields. The most visible change is China’s historic leap in economic strength, with the GDP growth up from 54 trillion yuan to 114 trillion yuan. Moreover, significant innovations have been made in manned spaceflight and space exploration, optical networks and 5G technology, infrastructure construction, etc.
However, in my view, the remarkable changes in my hometown have also provided a perfect illustration of China’s swift development. My hometown, Linfen City in Shanxi Province, a fourth-tier city with insufficient resources and a weak starting point, has thoroughly remoulded itself in the past decade.
Firstly, environmental improvement, probably the most obvious progress, has taken place in my hometown. Touted by many, coals in my hometown once caused severe smog pollution. Over-exploitation brought the city the toxic air, the gray sky, the subsided ground, and anything but economic improvement. However, in the past ten years, we have been unswervingly pursuing economic transformation, energetically developing the green economy and fostering new sources of economic growth. Just as our President mentioned, lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Now, in our nation, notably in my hometown, our people can enjoy a bluer sky, greener mountains, and cleaner water.
Secondly, intelligent agriculture has led to rural revitalization, which is part and parcel of China’s poverty alleviation achievements. With the introduction of big data services, the production and operation modes of orchards in my hometown have changed drastically. For instance, the pear industry in some counties has transformed from traditional vending into e-commerce. We can not only sell agricultural products, but also build online industrial chains so that more farmers can make a fortune at home. Obviously, the achievements in my hometown is the epitome of China’s overall success in poverty alleviation. So far, 98.99 million people in 832 counties and 128,000 villages have been lifted out of poverty. China’s practices in poverty alleviation show that ending poverty is not unattainable.
Thirdly, infrastructure and transportation have tremendously improved people’s livelihood. Our municipal government puts top priority on improving people’s living quality. Our citizens now have access to new schools, hospitals, libraries, museums, cultural and art centers, Olympic sports centers, and other facilities that have been completed in the past decade. All these infrastructure projects have turned the small town into a modern city. Beyond this, another note-worthy improvement can be found in transportation. In the past ten years, 65 billion yuan has been invested in highway transportation, and 2,112 administrative villages have been connected to high-speed railways and highways. In China, ensuring and improving people’s well-being is a long-term task that has no end but a new starting point.
Last but not least, fast-growing tourism has shown the world the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, further enhancing China’s cultural confidence. “Travelling is a departure, while visiting Linfen is going home.” Linfen is reshaping the image of an ancient city, showing people its long history and culture. For instance, the Hongtong Dahuaishu Ancestor Memorial Garden is China’s only sacred place with the theme of “searching for roots” and “ancestor worship.” The idea of “understanding Chinese culture and enhancing cultural confidence through tourism” is now popular in China. It is the interpretation of the 14th Five-Year Plan for tourism development. With the beginning of the research into the origin of Chinese civilization, our nation is making efforts to deeply excavate and thoroughly interpret cultural connotations. Furthermore, China is actively serving and coordinating the Belt and Road cooperation with other countries, as well as building transnational tourism belts.
In a nutshell, all of these are attributed to our mutual efforts during our remarkable decade. The past decade has witnessed China’s sustained and fast development. Great progress has been achieved in the environment, economy, overall national strength, and people’s lives. Despite all the trials and tribulations, the Chinese nation has emerged resiliently and has never given up its pursuit of great dreams. I delightedly and honestly look forward to our next decade!
