This is China
When speaking of China, people who are somehow familiar with it might be reminded of the Great Wall, old fairy tales, feudal dynasties, and maybe more recently, a prosperous socialist state. Indeed, China gained its reputation as a rapidly growing country for boasting a rich history long before. But there is still so much about this country with profound culture to be known, explored, and loved.
Chinese people are a hard-working nation. The world is constantly amazed by how fast this country has developed in the past 50 years. Behind the spectacular achievements is the hard work of millions of ordinary people in China. They find joy in the bittersweet life and make their fortune from scratch with bare hands. Emigrant workers leave their hometowns for better jobs and rejuvenate cities every single day. If you turn on the camera, look around on a train in the Spring Festival travel season, and ask how they feel, their smiling faces give out their excitement and relief to come home, unite with family and celebrate the New Year. Many young students go abroad for better education and come back to China after graduation to contribute their talent. They study hard at school and are always reliable partners in class. They gather together at festivals, cooking classic Chinese dishes, carrying their love for home, and sharing authentic Chinese flavor with friends from other countries.
Chinese people work together for a bigger cause. That’s why scientific breakthroughs happen every now and then, and significant projects can be finished in a short time. And each member respects and helps each other, and cares about each other like family. A famous song by Jackie Chan says a family is the smallest kingdom, and a kingdom is the largest family. Chinese people treat each other like family, and they pass on this kindness from generation to generation. Grandparents take care of little kids, and young people look after the elder in the community. It is not rare to see people in trouble receiving generous help from a total stranger, and people supporting each other in difficult times, such as food shortage, natural disaster, economic recession, etc.
Chinese people are ingenious and detail-oriented. Behind all the colorful signatures of China, such as dumplings, sugar-coated haws, and qipao, is the craftsmanship of Chinese people. Chinese craftsmen are deeply aware that patience makes fine products. So they are never bothered by how many steps it takes to finish a work, as long as they think it is worth going these extra miles. What’s more, Chinese calligraphy has evolved through five thousand years, from oracle bone script to seal script to regular script. Calligraphers of each generation have left endless inspiration for the next with unparalleled works and stories of assiduous practice for decades. Similarly, it may take years to design and finish an embroidery to become a part of clothing or artwork.
European art is more revealing and rich in color, while Chinese art has more simplistic strokes and leaves more space for imagination. Likewise, the charm of China and its people is more implicit. It takes time to realize and take in the vibe. You may not know a person well the first time you meet them. The way they greet each other might not seem as intimate as people in other countries, but this is exactly how Chinese culture differs from others. The connection between people is not built overnight; instead, their affection grows slowly but steadily, as the saying goes, “still water runs deep.” Chinese people are not usually accustomed to saying “I love you” to their family and friends, but their actions to look out for their loved ones speak for their hearts. Similarly, if you are really curious about what China and its people are really like, visiting China and befriending Chinese people is undoubtedly the best way.
As Zhang Yimou, director of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, responded in an interview, “Back in 2008, we still wish to show the world our splendid history and treasure, and seek attention to the Orient. But this time, we just want to share our values. Chinese people are such a nation that loves beautiful things, so genuine, kind, and romantic.” There are so many things we want to share with the world, our notion of living in harmony with nature, our wish to unite people who want to work hard for a better future, and our aspiration to be a responsible and reliable partner for other countries, and so on. Therefore, please accept this sincere invitation from Chinese people to get to know this country, and we believe you will love it.
